He sleeps… the pain meds have finally kicked in. After a week of being under the weather, Chris had surgery yesterday to remove his gallbladder.
The man is a trooper and taking it all in stride. Especially, considering all that he’s been through physically the past year… Seems like just yesterday we were in the hospital for his rotator cuff surgery. But that was 7 months ago and his rehab is just now coming to a close. He had just started driving again and we were getting ready for a road trip to Arizona to visit some dear friends of ours and have breakfast at Cracker Barrel and lunch at Whataburger (because that’s what we do!). 7 months without using his manual chair or driving. Yes, the man is a trooper.
This weekend I had a bit of a pity party about what truly is trivial BS but still BS none the less. Chris reminded me to stay focused on the good stuff. Today has been a very good reminder of what is important in life and how family and love is everything.
Unlike the TV show, Everyone Hates Chris, in the real world Everyone Loves Chris. What’s not to love? He has a heart of gold, he’s kind, loving, patient, compassionate, loyal, highly intelligent, street smart, and very, very easy on the eyes. I’m blessed that Chris has such a fabulous personality and so well liked. Chris was in a band in the 80s that had a pretty huge following. The band may have broken up and went their separate ways but the fans are still as loyal as they were back in the day.
Social media has played a huge part in reuniting many people from our pasts. I’m certainly not one to knock it, hell Facebook gave me the push to move back home to LA and without MySpace, Chris and I would not have connected. Chris avoids Facebook simply because he knows of all the drama that would happen the minute he got on there. So when I say I know the good, the bad and the very ugly of social media, I’m not kidding. I’ve been friended, unfriended, harassed, stalked, and yes, even blocked by Chris’ women fans.
Several of these “fans” are married, some divorced, a couple have had major health issues. And one has been in love with him since they were kids. To be quite honest through the years, there have been more than I can count. They’re all going through shit of some sort and quite often they pop up out of nowhere and then drop off as quickly as they showed up. They get their Chris fix, get to revisit their youth, get their ego pumped up and go on their merry way. It’s all harmless fun until its not… and occasionally their fantasy world crosses into our reality.
A couple of them have moved closer (including halfway across the country) to be with him – never mind that we were already living together. One tried to be my best friend, only to use me to get to spend more time with him and then panicked when she didn’t hear from him and came crying to me. I kid you not. I could write blog upon blog about some of these women’s back stories. Hmmmm. One sent a “care” package and included some pretty tasty homemade salsa. I liked it so much I thanked her on IG for it. 🙂
As Chris says, life gets messy sometimes and this has been a pretty messy couple of weeks. But at the end of the day, real life is all that matters. I am the one sitting here besides him in the hospital bed holding his hand while he sleeps. This is life. This is reality. Our reality. We share our dreams, our darkest secrets, our tears, our fears and most of all our laughter and shared interests. We build each other up and support each other to be the best that we can become in this thing called life. I truly feel for these women and I hope that they do find what they are looking for. But the answer isn’t seeking it in someone else or through someone else. The answer comes from within. I want them all to have what we have because I can assure you that our life together is better than any fantasy they can dream up.
ETA: Last week Salsa girl created an birthday extravaganza (her words not mine) for Chris. She sent him presents two days in a row, one of which was a delivery of cupcakes from a local bakery Serendipity Cupcakes. We’re all in agreement that it’s a bit creepy and weird.
