I have this good friend who is really into nautical stuff. After hanging out with her for several years now, I have picked up on this love as well. That tends to happen when you hang out with someone you really like. You pick up on some of their habits and likes. I especially like anchors. I like the symbolism of anchors as much as I like their purpose.
An anchor keeps a boat grounded even through the toughest winds. I know many of us are the anchors in our own friendships and within our own families. We are the ones people come to when our people need advice or just an open ear to listen. They depend on us not only when things get tough but on a daily basis. As mothers we are natural anchors, giving all that we have and more to our little ones who become big ones that seem to still need us even though their words may tell us differently. Being an anchor can become our identity as it feels good to be the one person that the people you love rely one when they need it. It can also be frankly, exhausting. Maybe you are the caregiver to an aging parent or maybe it’s just your responsibility to get dinner on the table for your family every night but still you know it’s you that people are depending on.
While being an anchor can be extremely rewarding, it is important for us to remember that in order for us to give from our cup, we must make sure there is some in our cup. What I mean is if we are not giving to ourselves first, we can not give to others. We must take time every day to take time for ourselves. Read a chapter from a book, take a nice long bath, maybe even just take a few moments to close your eyes, breathe and know that it’s going to be okay. While this is an extremely fast paced world we live in and it feels like there is just never enough time, it is most important to practice these daily personal affirmations to replenish our own cups so that we may continue to share from our cup.
Today I challenge you anchor to take just 5 minutes to yourself. Go outside if you can, take a deep breathe and give yourself some self love. It will recharge your batteries to continue to be that strong anchor everyone leans to.
So today’s photo of the day features anchors. And toothbrushes because healthy brushing habits are good for you as well.
