Alannah posted a cute little quote on the Beauty Cafe Instagram account the other day. Initially, I smiled and laughed because that’s obviously so NOT ME… really, I mean really, we’re haunted by something we didn’t buy?
And then… of course my mind immediately went back to that gorgeous powder blue coat cashmere coat at Filene’s in Philadelphia that I just couldn’t bring myself to buy… (cough cough) back in 1997.
The irony is that I’m not much of a shopper and definitely not a clothes horse or is it clothes whore? While I love fashion and clothes, in truth, I’m a minimalist in girlie girl terms. I believe in quality vs quantity. I don’t own a hundred pair of shoes. Maybe 10 (okay 15) and most of them boots. I do have a coat fetish or rather I did until I moved back to LA and I donated most of them to Goodwill. My fashion needs are simple I own a simple black cocktail dress but the rest of my clothing seems to be geared more towards park time with Julian, home office apparel and a stack of riding pants in case I ever get the urge again. So really what would I have done with a gorgeous powder blue cashmere coat?
Yet, 20 years later I still think about that gorgeous coat that I just couldn’t bring myself to buy. Not practical I told myself as I twirled around in the mirror like a princess in a party gown. Seriously, powder blue where the hell would I ever wear this coat? No we’re not haunted by the things we don’t buy… not at all.
